Childhood shows and life challenges
As I've started to settle down in a new city all on my own, I've found myself reflecting on the years that passed and revisiting much of the media that left a deep mark on me as a child. To my surprise, as I shuffled through old cartoons, watching old clips and episodes I enjoyed in my childhood, I found myself learning things that had gone over my head completely back then.
One of the shows that has been an anchor for me through these changes is My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. This is a cartoon series that is centered around learning the importance of a community and how to become a valuable part of one. While it may be easy to dismiss the show as just a children's program, it offers valuable life lessons that resonate deeply with me as I enter adulthood. The vibrant world of Equestria, inhabited by colorful ponies, provides a reflective canvas where viewers can learn about friendship, empathy, resilience, and other themes that showcase the complexities of life that have followed me into adulthood. In this essay, we will explore how "My Little Pony" has been guiding me through the intricacies of adulthood through a few examples of the lessons I've learned so far.
Lean on your community when you need it;
One of the most enduring themes of My Little Pony is the power of friendship. Throughout the series, we witness the six main characters—Twilight Sparkle, Applejack, Rarity, Fluttershy, Rainbow Dash, and Pinkie Pie—forging strong bonds of camaraderie. Entering adulthood, the importance of genuine friendships becomes increasingly evident. These connections offer support during tough times, enrich our lives, and provide a sense of belonging in an often isolating world. We see as these characters reflect and build on quality of their connections with those in their everyday lives, which is an essential component in all healthy relationships that can often be overlooked.How to cope with change and uncertainty.
Throughout the series, the ponies face several challenges and unexpected changes. The ability to adapt to shifting circumstances is an important lesson for all to keep in mind. Life is often unpredictable and, more often than not, unfair. Learning to navigate uncertainty and injustice with resilience and grace is essential for personal growth.Work-life balance and how to maintain it.
Through our main protagonist, Twilight Sparkle, the show emphasizes the significance of maintaining a balance between responsibilities and leisure. As we mature, many of us find ourselves overwhelmed by work, family, and other obligations, neglecting our own well-being. The show also highlights the repercussions that come along with such neglect. The show reminds us that it is crucial to make time for recreation and self-care. This time is vital and should be considered just as productive as any other work we do to keep ourselves happy, healthy, and in good shape to be able to show up as our best selves.
Revisiting My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has revealed life lessons that resonate deeply with me as I move into adulthood. This group of ponies models for us the essence of healthy connections on a surface level. These lessons allow me to further examine my life when I take a step back. This serves as an excellent reminder as I often hyperfixate on the tiny details of life and lose sight of what’s most important. My journey into adulthood has been illuminated by the valuable insights from this beloved show, reminding me of the magic found in meaningful connections and the strength derived from healthy relationships, both with others and ourselves.
